Owner of KFC, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell joins the cage-free movement
Yum! Brands, the world’s largest restaurant company with close to 50,000 locations globally across its KFC, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, and The Habit Burger Grill brands, released a global policy to transition to 100% cage-free eggs in the majority of its locations by 2026 and globally by 2030.
This commitment follows a relentless four-month long global campaign led by the Open Wing Alliance, a coalition of more than 70 organizations from 62 countries with the mutual goal to end the use of cages for chickens worldwide. Sinergia Animal has been an active member of the Open Wing Alliance since 2018 and has participated since this campaign’s inception through its victory.
Yum! Brands’ new global policy commits the company to sourcing 100% cage-free eggs and egg products in more than 150 countries and regions, and will complete by the end of 2030. The fast food corporation also agreed to provide annual progress reporting to ensure transparency.
Battery cages are considered one of the cruelest practices in animal farming. In these intensive systems, egg-laying hens are unable to perform many of their natural behaviors, such as spreading their wings completely, pecking, and nesting. Due to the extreme confinement, they experience high stress levels and are much more susceptible to the development of painful illnesses.
